The moment you have a child, you handle different emotions - oftentimes constantly and sometimes intensely.

The LOVE you feel for your child is powerful and amazing yet very challenging because right beneath the love is:
  • Fear - “What if something happens to my child?” “What if I can’t protect my child?”
  • Anxiety - “Am I doing this right?” “Am I doing a good job?”
  • Guilt - “Why can’t I be like the other parents?” “Why can’t I appreciate this?”
  • Ambivalence - “Did I make the right decision to put my career on hold?” “Did I make the right decision to keep working?”
  • Boredom - “How many times do we have to do this?” “My mind feels like it’s shrinking.”
  • Resentment - “Why are you giving me such an attitude?” “I didn’t sign up for this!” “How many times do I have to repeat myself?”
  • Sadness - “Why isn’t my child talking to me?” “I feel so disconnected.”

The transition to parenthood is also quite disorienting.  It can be hard to remember who you are, especially for women who go through pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and/or carry the burden of childcare. Your relationship with your partner also changes, and not always in a good way, because having a child upends the life and identity of your partner and disrupts the relationship you had together before your child came along.

All those feelings are normal, understandable, and all parents feel them! Most of the time, we can control our emotions. But when we get dysregulated and feel all sorts of feelings we aren’t able to manage, our children tend to carry or act out those feelings. That increases our frustration, annoyance, anxiety, which in turn amps up your child’s behaviors. Ahhh!!!

Yes... I'd like to figure some things out!

Susie has great courses for parents! But sometimes, you might need space to talk and process the feelings you’re experiencing. Some couples may also be disconnected and want a third person to help you communicate better.  Most of parenting is connecting with your kids. But if you haven’t sorted out and taken care of your emotional and psychological self or nurtured your relationship with your partner, it’s hard to fully connect with your little one. The thing is, everyone has mixed feelings about parenting… the love, frustration, joy, annoyance, gratification, depression, amazement, anxiety, guilt, and on and on. Parenting is rewarding but stressful and overwhelming at times. The fact that you’re looking up information on Healthy Little Sleepers shows your commitment to nurturing your kids.
